Stress Regulation and Learning Model: Enhancing mental health outcomes through Neurofeedback targeting the Prefrontal cortex
Neurofeedback is a learning tool based on neuroplasticity or the simple idea that the brain function changes with new learning. When used together with psychotherapy, Neurofeedback accelerates progress for patients presenting with anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma. Passive Infrared Hemoencephalography (pIR HEG) will be overviewed as an example of a simple non-invasive type of brain-based learning that increases prefrontal brain activity and is easily integrated with psychotherapy. Several clinical case examples will be presented involving the use of pIR HEG in clinical mental he...Read morealth practice.
Key brain principles will be summarized that describe how the brain changes under stress, particularly the relationship between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala. We will link these changes to clinical concepts like stress sensitization, dissociation, learning, and executive function. Four aspects of clinical progress that unfold from a more regulated brain will be revealed. Participants will learn how to think about behavior from a tension relief perspective and notice subtle changes in brain and nervous system arousal in patients. The Stress Regulation and Learning Model will be presented to explain how learning in the brain’s prefrontal cortex creates emotional tolerance and coping self-efficacy thereby opening up an enduring pathway for health. Learning Objectives
- Define what Biofeedback and Neurofeedback are and why brain-based learning is relevant to mental health treatment for anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma.
- Describe how brain changes under stress, particularly the relationship between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.
- Describe 4 key changes unfolding from a more regulated brain and how these can enhance the process of psychotherapy.
- Explain the relationship between Neurofeedback targeting the prefrontal cortex, enhanced emotional tolerance, and coping self-efficacy for lasting change.
- Utilize the Stress Regulation and Learning Model framework to observe changes and to strengthen new awareness and new brain patterns in clients.
